Ken and his farther Harvey farm on the Scuttlehole Road, Tyendinaga on a farm that has been in the family for four generations. The Goodfellow family came from Ireland and settled in Tyendinaga in the mid nineteenth century. Harvey’s father reared sheep and Harvey ran a dairy farm and switched to beef. They have run the farm without using chemicals for at least 25 years.

Harvey said “I once sprayed a field of corn and then sowed oats and nothing came up in one part of the field. The spray killed everything. I have never again used sprays.”

The main farm is 245 acres and they have an additional 75 ares and they also grow hay on other land. At present they have 25 cows of mixed breeds. “We are very careful about what we feed our cattle, said Ken Goodfellow.

The calves are reared with their mothers until they are weaned at eight months. They are then sold either as baby beef or to other farmers to fatten. The cattle winter in the dry cedar woods. Ken finds the animals do better outside than in the barn as temperatures are more constant.

In addition to cattle they rear some goats and keep a pot-bellied pig named Pearl and two ponies for the children.
