Andy Cernavez runs a small ostrich farm at 243 Bethal Road, Thomasburg. He isn’t selling meat or eggs at the moment, but if you are interested in learning more about the largest bird on earth he is happy to show you round. Ostriches are the largest birds in the world. They stand about two to two and a half metres tall and weigh between 113 – 159 kilograms. The adult males are black with a white tail and wing feathers and can be fierce. Females are grey/brown. They lay a cream coloured egg weighing about a kilogram, every second day. On average they lay between 30 – 60 eggs per year.
Apparently, in the wild, the male digs the nest and is solely responsible for incubation and the raising of chicks.
