The Red Steer is a traditional butcher's shop run by Duane Wingett and Julie Main. Dwayne started working in his butcher's shop in Lakefield when he was 10 years old and has been in the business ever since. He ran an abattoir in Peterbourgh for 12 years or he knows his beef.
You can get a variety of sausages home-made on site at The Red Steer, including honey-garlic, farmstyle, garlic and chive, maple, apple, sundried tomato, leek and black pepper, and the various Italian standards. They also have gourmet stuffed chicken breasts, London broils, marinated flat chicken, stuffed pork tenderloins and kebabs.
Duane get his beef from Norwick Packers (Norpac) in south western Ontario, which is run by the Heleniak family. They rear 20% of the beef themselves and have unique customized feeding process for their other suppliers.
At The Red Steer you can buy turkey reared by Hayter's Farm in Dashwood Ontario. You can pre-order fresh turkeys for Thanksgiving and Chirstmas. There are grain-fed chickens from a farm near Peterborugh, fresh Ontario lamb and pork.
The Red Steer has expanded its fresh fish and seafood counter - look for the weekly fresh fish specials. They also sell Ivanhoe cheese and have fresh bread on Fridays. They are closed on Mondays.
