Opening of the Peterson Trail

On Saturday, July 3, the Grand Opening of the Peterson Trail in Hastings Highlands takes place. The celebration will be held at 1568 Peterson Road in Maynooth at 10 a.m. with a guided hike followed by opening ceremonies and a free BBQ lunch at noon.

The Peterson Trail is full of rugged looping trails roaming through hardwood forests of sugar maple, beech and oak. It borders several wetlands including marshes and black spruce swamps. The Three Vista Loop is 6.2 Km. long and offers three impressive views to the north, east and west. No motorized vehicles are permitted on Peterson Trail.

Quinte Conservation hires 23 summer students

Quinte Conservation’s offices are bursting at the seams this summer, with the addition of 23 summer student employees. Employment grants from Job Connect, Federal Summer Job Program and the provincial Experience program allowed Quinte Conservation to offer student work terms from seven to sixteen weeks this summer.

Bald Headed Eagles are on the brink of recovery

Kennebec Lake Association and Frontenac Stewardship Council presents Bud Andress who will give a talk on Saturday July 10th, 2010 2-4pm Oso Hall, 1107 Garrett St., Sharbot Lake on Bald headed eagles in the 1,000 Islands.

Bud Andress, a retired park warden from the St. Lawrence Islands National Park who served for many years as Canadian co-chair on the Bald Eagle working group. Bud will talk about the bald eagle, its recovery and the ongoing research into this magnificent bird of prey.

Conservation day camp kids will meet snakes, a flying squirrel and a hawk this summer

Conservation Day Camp in Picton and Belleville offers kids ages 7 - 13 a chance to interact with nature in a very hands-on way. Conservation Education Coordinator Maya Navrot says, “We have a great line-up of special guests this year - each week has a different guest. Campers will get a chance to handle snakes, meet some flying squirrels and get to know a hawk - and that’s just the beginning!”

Quinte Conservation get funding to monitor algae on the Bay of Quinte

Quinte Conservation will be monitoring levels of blue-green algae in the Bay of Quinte this summer and fall thanks to funding from the Ministry of the Environment’s Ontario Drinking Water Stewardship Program. Quinte Conservation has received just over $150,000 for the project.

UK Composting volunteers recognised by the Queen with prestigious award

Bisley Community Composting Scheme is one of 103 UK volunteering groups to win this year’s The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service - the MBE for volunteer groups.

The prestigious National Honour recognises outstanding contributions made to local communities by groups voluntarily devoting their time for the benefit of others.

It sets the national benchmark for excellence in volunteering, with the work of those awarded being judged of the highest standard. Bisley Community Composting Scheme has more than 100 members who take their garden waste to a designated site in the village. Every year around 50 tonnes of this waste is transformed into compost, which is used by local residents.

Prosperity Acres is open on Saturady from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.; Sunday form 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. and Monday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

They do not usually open on Mondays.
