Mike and Linda Murphy farm on Murphy Road on the rolling hills south west of Tweed. They rear beef cattle, make hay, make maple syrup, grow potatoes and vegetables.

Mike Murphy rears Hereford and Charolais cattle for beef. Herefords, which are red with white faces, originally come from the west of England and Charolais, which are light coloured, come from France. The calves are on grass with their mothers and them brought into the yard for finishing.
Mike Murphy manages his wood lot sustainably, which meant he doesn’t over harvest. He has a beautiful wood lot with large trees which provide seed so young trees can grow up. He harvests a certain amount of timber each year for lumber and also for fire wood.
Heating your home with wood is very efficient as wood is a renewable resource and does not increase the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
The Quinte Branch of the Ontario Woodlot Association visited the woods at Murphy Farms in June this years.
Mike Murphy and his son-in-law Kevin Young make maple syrup in their new sugar shack, near Tweed, using the traditional open pan method. They built the sugar shack using timber from the farm. You can see how they make the syrup by watching Making maple syrup.
Mike grows a variety of different types of potatoes so you can select the type you need. He has Shepody, which are large and good for making French fries, red chieftains and early superior, which mature in only 80 days.
