Duo taps into niche market with country's first dairy sheep

by Jim Algie for The Sun Times

Grey County shepherds Chris Buschbeck and Axel Meister started something when they set out to build Canada's first flock of dairy sheep.

They imported 64 East Friesian sheep embryos from Europe in 1994 after searching without success for breeding stock in Canada. Now, 15 generations later, there are 50 milking flocks in Ontario alone and total production of about 1.5 million litres annually.
