Forestry Day

Over 250 students took part in Forestry Day at Joy Bible Camp on May 29. The organizing committee was chaired by Virginai deCarle, vice president of Bancroft and Area Forest Industry Association (B.A.F.I.A). Colleen Drew-Baehre, environmental science teacher at North Hastings Secondary School and her students in the Northern Environmental Resource Development (NERD) program played a key part in Forestry Day guiding the younger students through the various stations, including silviculture, tree marking, harvesting and tree planting.

Community Futures for North and Central Hastings and South Algonquin provided funding to raise awareness about career oportunities in forestry. The Ontario Trillium Foundation gave funding as part of the Local Wood Initiative to raise awareness of the role trees and woods have in sustainable living.
