Meet Jim Pedersen planting trees at the Ketcheson Farm

Each spring Jim Pedersen, coordinator with the Hastings Stewardship Council helps landowners plant trees on marginal farm land. This is part of the Ontario government's Trees Ontario program to plant 50 million trees by 2020. The Hastings Stewardship Council partners with the municipalities to give residents trees to plant on their property. Watch the local media and www.harvesthastings.ca coming events section for more details about time and place. You can order tree seedlings to purchase from Quinte Conservation and Lower Trent Conservation.

Ontario Beekeepers' Association workshops for 2010

Introductory Beekeeping This beekeeping workshop consists of classroom sessions and hands-on lessons in the bee yard. Participants of all experience levels are welcome. Topics include basic honey bee biology, beekeeping equipment, working in the bee colony, seasonal beekeeper responsibilities, harvesting and extracting honey and preparing bee colonies for winter. Each participant will receive a copy of the Ontario Beekeeping Manual.

Quinte Local Ontario Maple Syrup Producers Information Day

Please mark Friday, January 22, 2010 on your calendar for the Quinte Local Information Day. Please note the new location. This year it will be held at Tweed White Building at the Fair Grounds off of Louisa Street. Registration will be from 8.30 to 9.30 a.m. with the meeting starting at promptly at 9.30. The day will be packed with reports of OMSPA’s activities, including the Summer Tour, with technical information and an “Open Forum” for everyone to join in. A delicious lunch will be served. The cost for the lunch will be $10.00 per person.

Quinte Conservation launches a new species at risk awareness pprogram

January 6, 2010 Quinte Conservation is using the Internet to get the word out on species at risk in our area. Each month the Quinte Conservation website will feature a different species at risk. January's featured species is the Southern Flying Squirrel.

Order seedlings now for planting in the spring

Quinte Conservation is now taking orders for tree and shrub seedlings for planting next spring. Any landowner within the Quinte Conservation watersheds may order trees. There is no minimum acreage requirement; however, the minimum order is 100 trees.
