Sustainability

The County of Hastings County includes Hastings County, the City of Belleville and the City of Quinte West and the Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory, with its forests, farmland, lakes, rivers and small and large communities, is well situated to lead in the field of alternative energy development, conservation of natural resources,  sustainable agriculture and forestry and artisan food production. 

Harvest Hastings is about living lightly on the land. Sustainability has four sections on land stewardship, tree planting, managing woods and wildlife at  Caring for Land; discussion about Climate Change; finfd out about Green Communities, and read about what's happening in Local Agriculture. At this time of year there are a great variety of apples to chose from in Ontario. We are especially lucky in this area as we not only have a number of orchards but also have apple stores with cold storage to keep apples fresh though to next summer.

We can get apples from The Apple Store, Grills Orchards, Kupecz Family Farm, Campbell's Orchard, Russett Farms, The Apple Gate, Hilltop Orchards and more. Check What's grown locally and search for apples.

Order seedlings now for planting in the spring

Quinte Conservation is now taking orders for tree and shrub seedlings for planting next spring. Any landowner within the Quinte Conservation watersheds may order trees. There is no minimum acreage requirement; however, the minimum order is 100 trees.

Annual Hike Ontario Summit

Every year in October or November, Hike Ontario host's its Annual Summit - a weekend gathering for hikers, walkers and trail enthusiasts. The 2009 Summit is being held on November 13-15, 2009 in Quinte West, Ontario, hosted by the Friends of the Trail Inc.
