Sustainability

The County of Hastings County includes Hastings County, the City of Belleville and the City of Quinte West and the Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory, with its forests, farmland, lakes, rivers and small and large communities, is well situated to lead in the field of alternative energy development, conservation of natural resources,  sustainable agriculture and forestry and artisan food production. 

Harvest Hastings is about living lightly on the land. Sustainability has four sections on land stewardship, tree planting, managing woods and wildlife at  Caring for Land; discussion about Climate Change; finfd out about Green Communities, and read about what's happening in Local Agriculture. Workshop on Bird Migration over and around Lake Ontario

The Kingston Field Naturalists are organizing a workshop to discuss what is currently known about bird migration routes over and around Lake Ontario. The aim is to assess the current information on migration routes, in order that environmental assessments carried out for windfarm projects can be evaluated.

Enright Cattle Company annual Pancake Breakfast and Sleigh Ride

Kara and Darold Enright of the Enright Cattle Company host an annual pancake breakfast and sleigh ride. This year they had four horsemen with four team to take everyone for the farm house to cabin in the woods. The Enright Cattle Company rear pure bred Simmental cattle for beef.

Get out to buy your maple syrup directly from the sugar bush. Jim Pedersen, Hastings Stewardship Council co-ordinator says explore the diversity of local food and other products produced in Hastings County. It is all about knowing your farmer. He is at the First Tapping celebration of the start of the growing season at Terry and Vicki Gervais' sugar bush, Trillium Ridge in Tyendinaga on February 25.

The first tapping is a celebration of the beginning of the growing season. This year it was at Terry and vicki Gervais' Trillium Ridge Sugar Works  at 254 Maple Sugar Road in Tyendinaga, on February 25. Ron Hubbs president of the Quinte Chapter of the Ontario Maple Syrup Producers Association speaks about the history and romance of maple syrup.
