The County of Hastings County includes Hastings County, the City of Belleville and the City of Quinte West and the Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory, with its forests, farmland, lakes, rivers and small and large communities, is well situated to lead in the field of alternative energy development, conservation of natural resources, sustainable agriculture and forestry and artisan food production.

Harvest Hastings is about living lightly on the land. Sustainability has four sections on land stewardship, tree planting, managing woods and wildlife at Caring for Land; discussion about Climate Change; finfd out about Green Communities, and read about what's happening in Local Agriculture. Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources finalize elk management program

Under the guidance of Ontario's Elk Management Plan, and consistent with Ontario's Cervid Ecological Framework, the province is implementing a comprehensive management program to support healthy and self-sustaining elk populations. This comprehensive elk management program will provide a range of benefits for Ontarians, including the first modern day elk hunt in the province, tools for managing human-elk conflicts and guidelines to supporting sustainable management now and into the future.

As part of implementing this program the following components of the elk management program have been finalized.

The Ontario government is pleased to announce the first elk hunt in the province since the restoration of elk to Ontario in the late 1990s. The restoration of elk is a significant achievement for the province, made possible by the many partners who contributed to bringing elk back to Ontario.

Elk hunt announced for fall 2011 in North Hastings County

The new year is starting off on a high note with the announcement by Minister of Natural Resources, Linda Jeffrey, that there will be an elk hunt this fall.

The move comes more than a decade after elk were first transferred from Alberta and released in target areas in Ontario as part of a major restoration effort. The Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters (O.F.A.H.) has made a significant financial and volunteer contribution to the plan, which was led by the MNR, and is pleased that the hard work of all the partners has paid off.
