Sustainability

The County of Hastings County includes Hastings County, the City of Belleville and the City of Quinte West and the Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory, with its forests, farmland, lakes, rivers and small and large communities, is well situated to lead in the field of alternative energy development, conservation of natural resources,  sustainable agriculture and forestry and artisan food production. 

Harvest Hastings is about living lightly on the land. Sustainability has four sections on land stewardship, tree planting, managing woods and wildlife at  Caring for Land; discussion about Climate Change; finfd out about Green Communities, and read about what's happening in Local Agriculture. Harvest Hastings member send Red Fife wheat flour to Rideau Hall for the Queen's State Banquet

Harvest Hastings member CIPM Farm on Storms Road, north of Stirling received an exciting surprise last week - a request to supply Red Fife flour to the Governor General’s residence Rideau Hall in Ottawa for an upcoming State Banquet for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth. CIPM also provided Red Fife wheat flour to the 2010 Winter Olympic in Vancouver. Red Fife wheat is a heritage variety that has been grown since 2004 on the CIPM Farm where it is stone-milled into whole grain flour. The flour has achieved considerable popularity with chefs and bakers as well as consumers who are becoming aware of the health benefits of whole grains.

Jennifer Nash of Prosperity Acres Farm Garden Centre, says "We are very happy with this year's crops! We invite you to drop in to see for yourself."

Prosperity Acres is open on Saturady from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.; Sunday form 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. and Monday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

They do not usually open on Mondays.

Opening Day for Maynooth Farmers' Market

Don't miss the opening day of the Maynooth Farmers' Market. The weekly market starts on Saturday May 29 and is from 8 a.m. - 1 p.m. There is fresh organic produce, home baking, homemade bread and rolls, maple syrup, homemade perogies, flower and vegetable plants, unique handmade crafts, and much much more. You are invited to come and enjoy.

The market is on every Saturday until Saturday, October 9, 2010 on Highway 62 in Maynooth.

Tweed Farmers' Market opens May 22

Tweed Farmers' Market opens on Saturday May 22, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. in the beautiful Memorial Park by Stoco Lake. This year there will be vendors selling vegetables, local beef, woodwork, home baking, potatoes, hand-made jewelry, alpaca products, butter tarts, perennials and acrylic paintings.

Celebrate Signs on the Salmon. For 12,000 years the Salmon River was an important corridour and destination for early First Peoples. Let it be your destination as we celebrate two new information guideboards on the Salmon Rver. Learn about the Salmon's History and ecology.

Saturday, May 29 at 1 p.m. on Salmon Bridge on Marysville Road with a reception to follow. Also see Harlan House Pottery: classic works of art. 3.30 p.m. at Roblin at the boat launch on the south end of the town for an unveiling ceremony and a relaxing paddle on the river. Reception and sale of local plants.

For anyone wanting to paddle we will put into the water at 2.30 p.m., tour of lovely silver maple area and back to Roblin for 3.30 p.m. for the ceremony. For more information: friends of salmonriver.ca
