Sustainability

The County of Hastings County includes Hastings County, the City of Belleville and the City of Quinte West and the Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory, with its forests, farmland, lakes, rivers and small and large communities, is well situated to lead in the field of alternative energy development, conservation of natural resources,  sustainable agriculture and forestry and artisan food production. 

Harvest Hastings is about living lightly on the land. Sustainability has four sections on land stewardship, tree planting, managing woods and wildlife at  Caring for Land; discussion about Climate Change; finfd out about Green Communities, and read about what's happening in Local Agriculture. Strawberries are ripening fast and there are many farms you can go to to buy strawberries either ready picked or pick your own. Unfortunately Beckett Farms at Welmans Corner, Stirling-Rawdon are no longer growing strawberries but there are lots of other farms.

Sustainable Community Resources and Needs Assessment Survey

The Friends of the Frink Centre funded a Job Creation Project for a Sustainable Community Outreach Facilitator; the position starts with a survey; please find attached the survey for you to fill out. The purpose of the survey is to determine: 1. the extent to which sustainable community initiatives have been successfully implemented; 2. areas in which sustainable community development should be promoted and fostered to a greater extent; 3. what resources, individuals, businesses, organizations are available and are needed to build a meaningful sustainable community.

Local Agri-Food innovators celebrated

Innovative ideas grown by Ontario farmers were celebrated today at a ceremony in Tweed honouring local winners of the province's regional awards for innovation excellence. These fresh ideas are contributing to the local economy, boosting the agri-food industry and giving consumers more choice.

The Premier's Agri-Food Innovation Excellence awards are part of a $2.5-million, five-year program (now in its third year) established to recognize innovators who contribute to the success of Ontario's agri-food sector.

Leona Dombrowsky Ontario minister of agriculture, food and rural affairs the province recognized winners, who received $5,000 each for their innovations. The area winners, who were presented with their awards on June 5 in Tweed.
