American toad

September 27, 2012 by Louise Livingstone

Did you know there were only two species of toad in Ontario? The Fowler toad is only found on sandy shorelines along the edge of Lake Erie. The American toad (Anaxyrus americanus or Bufo americanus) like this one is much more common in southern Ontario. Ontario Nature has a good write up on them. This large toad was sunning itself beside our house. Unlike frogs the skin of a toad is dry.
