Richters Greenhouse

John Richter, with his daughter Nadine, and help from his wife Dianne, run Richters’ Greenhouse. This is the second year they have opened their greenhouse and market garden at 8786 Highway 62 North, just north of Foxboro.

John is an experienced nursery man and grower, and is proud to say they take everything ‘from seed to sale’. His father John Richter trained to be a vegetable grower but joined the Canadian military. When he retired he opened a greenhouse and market garden on Highway 2 at Bayside selling flowers as well as vegetables.

Being an grower, means John is knowledgeable about plants and he and Nadine are always experimenting with growing new varieties. As well as the standard line of annuals, perennials, hanging baskets, planters and herbs, they introduce 30 new plants each year.

“We like to bring you new ideas and new plants for your garden,” said John.

In the fall they are going to have potatoes, beans, tomatoes, pumpkins, squash, ad a fall line up of flowers such as asters, kale, ornamental cabbages and sunflowers.

John and Nadine believe in providing an excellent product at a reasonable price and also in providing information about plants and gardening.

Richters’ Greenhouse is an interesting place to stop. It is country style and John and Nadine are very welcoming and the atmosphere is relaxed. Do ask to see the pineapple lillies and the other unusual plants they have for sale.

They are open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. seven days a week.

Oak Lake Farm

Harold and Marion Peters and their son Jonathan farm 50 acres on Harrington Road in Sidney Ward, Quinte West. They took over the farm from Marion’s father Dieter Johle who had farmed there for 20 years.

Dieter had a herd of Gelbvieh cattle and the Peters now have their own herd with nine cows. They like Gelbvieh as they are docile and friendly cows. The breed developed in northern Bavaria. They are golden brown in colour with dark hooves. The cows are good mothers and produce lots of milk. Gelbvieh catlle were brought into Canada in the 1970s and they are now the sixth most popular breed in the county. They sell naturally grown beef from their cows.

The Peters also have a small strawberry patch and a large vegetable garden. They sell vegetables from a stall in their front yard. There will be sweet corn, tomatoes, zucchini, butternut squash, spagetti squash and pumpkins.

If you need small square bales of hay you can get them from the Peters. Jonathan is making hay with advice from his grandfather.

West Moira Orchards

Norm and Fred McCaw live at 1071 Harrington Road, R.R.#2, Frankford. They used to be dairy farmers but now rear beef cattle, cash crop and growing soft fruit, apples and vegetables. They took over West Moira Orchards on the 537 Moira Street West in October 2007 from Kurt and Karen Kaiser. The Roadside store is on the south side of West Moira Road and the 100 acre farm is on the north side.

Sager Strawberry Patch

John and Marilyn Sager bought the Sager family homestead where John was born and planted their two acre strawberry patch six years ago.
