Northwood Lumber is located southeast of Bancroft. It is a full-service sawmill that retails both rough and dressed lumber, as well as other quality sawmill products and services. They do custom planing, sawing, and resawing, and also make traditional, hand-hewn timber for posts, beams and siding. Originally opened in the 1960’s, the mill was purchased by Edward and Sarah Martin in 2009 and renamed to Northwood Lumber.
They stock mostly local eastern white cedar, but also have pine, spruce, hemlock, poplar, basswood, ash and red oak. Most of the lumber they sell is sold to local homeowners and builders for decks, docks and siding, including board and batten. They also retail locally-made outdoor cedar furniture that is made from lumber milled at their facility.
They make various types of siding and have recently started to make an interesting wood cladding that is the size of a brick face. A special planer makes a beveled shiplap siding that has a slot to lock the siding in place, keeping it good and tight.
All the wood they process is purchased from local loggers and harvested locally. Their lumber can be graded and stamped. Most of their finished lumber is slightly larger than standard finished lumber as well, making for a stronger, more stable product.
hey are currently erecting a structure to house this new planer which will now allow them to do logs up to 8” X 16”. Future expansion plans include the purchase of a debarker and a kiln.
