Much of the milk produced in Hastings County goes to Reid’s Dairy in Belleville to be processed into a variety of milk products. Reid’s Dairy has a long history. In 1951, Arthur Quickert and his family arrived in Canada from war-torn Germany. Skilled in the traditional dairy trade of his native Germany, it was not long before Arthur put these skills to use in his new home, Belleville, Ontario. On November 1, 1951, only one month after his arrival, Arthur Quickert started work at the Black Diamond Cheese Factory for 75 cents an hour. Within three years, Arthur was general manager of the Belleville plant and soon after Arthur had totally redesigned the Black Diamond factory. With his keen business sense and knowledge of the Canadian dairy industry, Arthur quickly established his own dairy business and along the way Reid’s Dairy was aquired in the 1960’s. Reid’s Dairy is still owned and operated entirely by the Quickert Family with Arthur’s grandsons, David and Stephen at the helm.
