Academic Turned Farmer Charts Different Course

Alternative farmers are an eclectic bunch, but even in that group Gert Janssens stands out as different.

The 38-year-old is a city guy from Belgium who became an economist in order to finance his “naïve” dream of raising cattle, Tamworth pigs, sheep, some poultry, and honey on a small farm in Québec. He also says alternative farmers should learn some lessons in business from conventional ones, even while insisting mainstream producers have a seriously flawed business model.
