Going solar

Hastings Stewardship - 2018 Winter Speaker Series

Would you like to cut back on your hydro bill and reduce your carbon footprint? Find out how on March 1 in Ivanhoe, when the Hastings Stewardship Council hosts the third event in their Winter Speaker Series - Going Solar, featuring Brad Leonard, local solar specialist. Do you have a hydro bill that is hard to understand, is too high, and keeps getting higher? You may have heard that solar is making money for some people and is helping others reduce their hydro bills. Brad Leonard is a solar specialist at Friendly Fires in Kingston (

His presentation will show how installing solar is a great way to take back some control over your hydro bill and feel good about using clean energy.

Solar energy helps you do your part in slowing climate change. The average residential solar system offsets about 100,000 lbs. of carbon dioxide in 20 years – the equivalent of driving a car for 100,000 miles. There’s a solar stimulus!

Solar is much more affordable than ever before and has reached the point where it’s no longer an unpredictable, sci-fi, technical struggle. It is proven technology, without batteries or other complications (for grid-tied solar). Simply mount panels on your roof to produce the electricity to power your home directly. Since solar is now cheaper than utility power for most people, less power from the grid means your bills will go down. Brad will also explain the details and approvals needed to complete a solar project.

Brad Leonard has been working in the solar industry for over 20 years. He was a member of the Canadian Solar Industries Association’s microFIT advisory board, a director at SWITCH (centre for sustainable energy in Kingston), and is now a co-owner at Friendly Fires. If you’ve got a roof and a hydro bill, solar can likely help you save money – and move you to a greener future using clean electricity from solar panels. An entrance fee of $5.00 per person (or a donation) will help cover costs. Children are free.
