The Isle of Eigg in the Inner Hebrides, off the west coast of Scotland home to around 80 people becomes self sufficient in energy. They have gone totally off grid with a mixture of wind, solar and hydo electric schemes, according to BBC article February 1, 2008.
The scheme cost in the order of £1.6m ($3m) and provides 95% of the energy needs. The rest is provided by generators. Funds were raised by the community
The Isle of Eigg Heritage Trust raised £45,000 ($90,000 for the project and the islanders brought in a further £30,000.($60,000)
Funding also came from Europe, the Big Lottery Fund, Highlands and Islands Enterprise, Highlands and Islands Community Energy Company, the Scottish Government and Highland Council.
