A national food strategy is the keystone of the Liberal agricultural policy for the May 2 election. The idea of a national policy to provide a long term vision for the industry has been championed by both the Canadian Federation of Agriculture and the National Farmers Union. The strategy, included as part of the national policy launch, focuses on healthy living, safe food, sustainable farm incomes, environmental farmland stewardship and international leadership.“A healthier Canada is founded on healthy eating, and understanding the role of food in our lives, our economy and our communities,” the policy notes. “Ensuring all Canadians – including low-income families – have access to affordable, healthy foods, will contribute significantly to addressing Canada’s healthcare challenges.”
