Windy Wold Farm
Lynn Davis and Carol Counts run Windy Wold Farm in the hills south of Maple Leaf. Lynn is a pilot with Air Canada and Carol is an art teacher. The Davis family have farmed in Carlow/Mayo since the mid nineteenth century and Lynn is the fourth generation Davis on the farm. His mother Bernice gave the farm the name Windy Wold Farm, as wold is an old English name for a hill. Although the land is flat and the soil is free of stone, there are challenges. Davis has to lime the soil to get the right pH as the soil is too acid without liming. He thinks acid rain may be affecting this area. The lime he uses comes all the way from Pembroke. Davis and Courts rear sheep and cattle on the farm and grow hay for themselves and for sale to horse owners. They keep Dorset sheep and some Leicester crosses and have a small beef cow calf operation.
