Levi Caya is a very talented chainsaw carver. From his childhood days in the Brancroft area watching his grandfather carve birds, Levi has gone on to international fame as a respected carver, placing highly in carving festivals in Germany and Poland. He placed third in an international competition in London, Ontario last year. His ambition is not just to be invited to international competitions, but to win them as well. Next year is hoping to attend competitions in Japan and Australia. When he is not attending festivals, he works out of his home studio just outside of Apsley.
At some of the competitions he attends, the carvers are given a block of wood and have a limited time to make whatever the wood inspires them to make. This creates an interesting challenge for the carvers, as the grain and the knots make each piece of wood unique. It takes a lot of talent and practice to be able to ‘read’ the wood and decide what the wood is best suited for. Levi has done very well in these competitions, placing in the top three in a competition in Germany and winning one in Canada.
A high school teacher realized how much talent Levi had and got him into a co-op program to further his skills. Under the guidance of a local carver he honed his craft, learning how to use power tools, how to apply different finishes, and how the properties of the different types of wood allow for different types of carving. During his co-op program Levi also learned the business aspects of wood carving. Today Levi creates any number of amazing creations, from 10 foot tall realistic bears to smaller, whimsical wood spirits. You will often find Levi plying his trade at many local festivals, including the Marmora Snofest.
